Carol Basgall

Carol Elaine Basgall, 91, Topeka, passed away April 3, 2007 at Stormont Vail Regional Medical Center. She was born in Parkersburg, Iowa April 5, 1915 the daughter of Richard A. and Lela Yost Ludeman. She graduated from Mason City, Iowa, High School in 1933, she attended North Iowa Area Community College and the University of Northern Iowa. She taught at Portland Township School No. 2. She worked at Merkels, Damons, and Younkers stores and was assistant director for Charlie Brown Community Day Care Center in Mason City, Iowa. She was a 4-H leader and Den Scout mother. She married Phillip J. Sheridan of Clear Lake, Iowa. They were divorced. She married Sylvester P. Basgall of Mason City, Iowa. He preceded her in death September 12, 1987. Carol was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Topeka, Kansas and a member of Chapter CS of PEO. She loved music and played the piano and violin. Her book “The Eight Decades of Lela Yost” has been accepted into the Women’s Archives at the University of Iowa Library. She was a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House for five years and also served as a CASA volunteer (court appointed special advocate) for children in Topeka. She is survived by three daughters, Elaine (Sherry) Hiszczynskyj and husband, Dr. Roman Hiszczynskyj, Topeka, Kansas, Suzanne Factor and her husband, Ronald Factor of Marksville, Louisiana, Cynthia Berg and her husband Sherman Berg of Blair, Nebraska; three sons, Dr. Richard Sheridan and his wife, Frances of Grass Valley, California, Michael Sheridan of Topeka, Kansas, and Daniel Basgall of Cowpens, South Carolina; two step daughters, Shirley Hain and Jan Meyer of Mason City, Iowa; 16 grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, and one deceased grandchild. She is also survived by three sisters, Lois Dyk of Silverdale, Washington, Naomi Swyter of Mason City, Iowa and Maxine Cearley of Claremont, California. She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Ludeman. Family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 9 2007 at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Rd, Topeka KS 66614. A parish rosary will be prayed Monday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will be Thursday, April 12, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery Mason City, Iowa. Major Erikson Funeral Home is in charge of graveside services in Mason City, Iowa.
