James Schwartz

James “Jim” Evan Schwartz, whose gentle heart left a lasting impression on all who met him, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 66, with his family by his side, following a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Jim was born on April 11, 1960, in Dodge City, Kansas, to Eugene and Margaret Schwartz. He attended Dodge City High School, where he participated in gymnastics, golf, and band, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Kansas, Jim attended the KU School of Pharmacy, graduating in 1984. Throughout his life, Jim remained a devoted Kansas Jayhawk fan. After graduation, Jim moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where he began his career as a hospital pharmacist. He later returned to Kansas and, in 1987, partnered with Newt King to establish King Pharmacy in Topeka. In 1996, he purchased the pharmacy from the King family. As a compounding pharmacist, Jim earned the respect of both the medical community and his customers through his exceptional knowledge, personalized care, and genuine compassion. His dedication to serving others made King Pharmacy a trusted resource for countless patients and healthcare professionals. Debbie and Jim began dating in the summer of 2007, and they were married on June 9, 2012. Their relationship was built on unwavering devotion and a deep commitment to one another. Over their 19 years together, Jim was the steady calm to Debbie’s spirited nature—offering quiet strength and loyal support. Together they enjoyed traveling, loved spending time on their boat at Lake Sherwood with friends and family, and always made time for Mexican food (with margaritas of course). They created countless cherished memories, finding joy in both life’s adventures and its simple everyday moments. Jim was a devoted father to his stepchildren, Collin Erbert and Hayley Hough, loving them unconditionally and embracing them as his own. His guidance, patience and protection were constant in their lives. He was also a proud grandfather to Everley Hough, and nothing brought him more happiness than spending precious time with her. Jim kept fond memories of time spent with family in Pagosa Springs, Colorado—fishing, hiking, skiing, and camping. He shared a special bond with his nieces, Kelly McNeil and Jana Lusk, and their families. Family holidays and gatherings were among his greatest joys, and Jim valued every opportunity to be together with those he loved. Jim will be missed beyond words. His kindness, quiet humor, selflessness, and warmth will forever be woven into the fabric of his family’s legacy. Those fortunate enough to have known “Jimmy” were truly blessed by his presence. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Margaret Schwartz. Jim is survived by his wife, Debbie Schwartz; children, Collin Erbert of Overland Park, Kansas, and Hayley Hough (Derek) of Los Angeles, California; granddaughter, Everley Hough; six siblings, John Schwartz (Lisa), Mark Schwartz (Terry), Steve Schwartz, Margaret Lacey (Rich), Marilyn Eklund (Dan), and Paul Schwartz (Barbara); father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Gloria Schmitz; cherished by his 10 nieces and nephews; and extended family and numerous friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 25th, 2026, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5973 SW 25th Street, Topeka KS 66614. Private inurnment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery later.
