Janice Bond Gill

Janice Marie Gill (née Bond), 60, passed away early in the morning on Friday, January 5th, 2024. Born November 11th, 1963, and raised in Topeka, Kansas, Janice was the youngest of Thomas and Nina Bond’s seven children. Janice graduated from Topeka West High School in 1982, and five years later while playing volleyball with some friends, she met Stephen Gill, whom she married on July 22nd, 1989. In 1991 she enrolled at Washburn University and graduated in 1994 with a degree in Respiratory Therapy. Janice was passionate about many things, especially caring for and serving others, and she would spend the better part of the next thirty years tending to the patients at Stormont Vail HealthCare—including, remarkably, during the COVID-19 pandemic while she herself was undergoing treatment. Janice loved her job, being a respiratory therapist, but there was one thing she loved more—four things, really—her children. Above all else, Janice wanted to be a mother, and so she and Steve had four children: Adam (31), Joshua (29), Hannah (27), and Andrew (25). Raising them and being able to see, as much as she did, the lives that her children would go on to make for themselves was her proudest accomplishment. In 2018, Janice was first diagnosed with breast cancer, and after a few years of tenaciously fighting, she was able to again experience cancer-free life in 2022. Unfortunately, in January 2023 the cancer had returned. Janice persistently continued to work at Stormont until she was no longer physically able. She spent the remainder of her final year at home, watching all her favorite movies, being visited by friends and family, eating as much ice cream and pizza as she could tolerate, and being cared for and lovingly nagged by her family to take her pills and use her walker. Andrew moved back from California, and Josh and his girlfriend, Taryn Traub, moved back from Iowa to be closer to Janice. Hannah came up from Texas for weeks or even months at a time to be with her. Adam and his wife, Rachel, both nurses in Boston, Massachusetts and now expecting their first child, came back as often as baby preparations and OB/GYN appointments would allow. Her sisters, Theresa Hart and Sherri Thogmartin also came to stay with her as often as possible. Such was the sense of love, loyalty, and desire to serve that Janice instilled in her children and inspired in those around her. In the end, Janice passed peacefully, at home, surrounded by her children and husband. Janice is preceded in death by her father and mother, Thomas and Nina Bond. She is survived by her children, Adam Michael Gill, Joshua Thomas Gill, Hannah Marie Gill, and Andrew Stephen Gill; daughter-in-law, Rachel Gill (née Potvin); Adam and Rachel’s child (due in February); husband, Stephen Gill; brothers Dale, Greg, Gary, and Tim Bond; sisters Theresa (Bond) Hart and Sherri (Bond) Thogmartin; and many nieces and nephews. The memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614.
