John Tinsley

John Wayne Tinsley, 83, Topeka, Kansas, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2025, with his family by his side. John was born and grew up in the Horton, Kansas area. He graduated from Everest High School in 1960 and played basketball while attending Highland Community College. John joined the Army National Guard and served in Vietnam achieving the rank of Master Staff Sergeant. On November 21, 1964, John and Sandra Kay Bunck were united in marriage, enjoying over 60 years together. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad prior to his active duty and upon his return, attended Washburn University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He was then employed by Falley’s Inc. as director of data processing and accounting until that business was sold, but John remained in the food business until his retirement at the age of 80. A member of Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 534, John bowled on the Knight’s team, Spazz Balls, for years. He was a lifelong Jayhawks and Chiefs fan. John never met a stranger – he knew someone wherever he went and the few times he did not he made new friends. John will be greatly missed. Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Sandy Tinsley; daughter, Kim Culliss (Brian); son, Kevin Tinsley; granddaughters, Ella and Alexandra Culliss; and his sister, Joan Kuck. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jim, and sisters, Marjorie Nigh and Jane Clement. Family will greet friends from 5 until 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614, where the rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10, at Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church. Cremation will follow with inurnment in Everest, Kansas at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mother Teresa of Calcutta Church Building Fund, sent in care of the funeral home.
