Margaret "Maggie" Warren

Margaret Irene Warren passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2026, surrounded by friends & family. She was Born March 5, 1952, in Topeka, KS to William and Edna Freeland Seever. Margaret grew up in Jefferson County and graduated in 1970 from Valley Falls High School. She began volunteer leadership at an early age as a member and president of Prosperity 4-H club at Half Mound. She was one of two female students who enrolled in the Mechanical and Architectural Drawing class in “the shop building” at VFHS’. From then on, she pioneered as a woman in “a man’s world.” In the summer of 1970, she enrolled in summer school at Washburn University and moved into a dorm on campus that fall. Her dorm roommate insisted on calling her Maggie and the name stayed with her to the end. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and the 1st of four female cadets in the Air Force ROTC Program at Washburn. Maggie graduated from Washburn University in May of 1974. She immediately began working for Associated Students of Kansas, a statewide student lobbying organization with an office in the Washburn Student Union. The primary focus of the organization at that time was introduction and passage of the Kansas Landlord Tenant Act. In 1977, she teamed up with Jim Slattery and Jerry Brosius to start Brosius & Slattery Realtors, Inc. With her background in landlord tenant law, she quickly became involved in management of rental properties. Jerry commented about those days by saying, “It was such a special time. We were young and we were always just trying to do things right. Maggie was a part of all of that. We were free to grow the business because we had her on our team and she left a lasting impression on us all.” In February of 1981, Maggie started Wheatland Property Management, Inc. with the support of both Jim and Jerry. She held a real estate broker’s license and a Certified Property Manager Designation from the Institute of Real Estate Management, a division of the National Association of Realtors, and was a member and past president of the Topeka Board of Realtors and chair of the Kansas Association of Realtors Political Action Committee. In 1990, She was honored as Realtor of the Year by the Topeka Board of Realtors. Being involved in the housing business, Maggie loved and supported the ERC Designer’s Showhouses and CASA Homes for the Holidays. She owned and operated Wheatland until she sold the business and retired in 2020. Maggie was also an active member of the community, having served on the Board of Directors of the Topeka Chamber of Commerce, Vice Chair of Convention & Visitor’s Bureau and a member of the Small Business Council. She was honored as Chamber Member Volunteer of the Year in 1988. Her other community leadership positions included being a member of the boards of Brewster Place, The Topeka Women’s Fund, Topeka Symphony League and YWCA. AND Maggie chaired the Topeka Symphony Gala, loved to donate art objects and attended the Gala annually with a table full of friends. She was an active member of PEO Chapter AJ, a member of the Washburn Women’s Venture Partnership and the Whiting Society, and a life member of the Washburn University Alumni Association. She was an avid supporter of Topeka Civic Theatre and a member and President of the TCT Endowment Board. In 2003, Maggie was appointed by the Shawnee County Commissioners to serve on the Washburn Board of Regents. She served eight years, including one year as Chair of the Board. One of the first decisions made by the BOR during her term was to move the Carroll Chapel from Menninger Hill to its current location on the Washburn campus. Another decision of importance to Maggie was that of Washburn assuming the operation of the Kaw Area Vocational Technical School and transforming Washburn Tech into an incredibly dynamic arm of the Washburn campus. In 1978, Maggie married Mark Johnson and later they were divorced. For the next ten years Maggie Johnson devoted her time and energy toward development of her business and community leadership, but in 1994 she re-connected with an old college friend, Dale Warren, and they were married in 1995. Together they built a beautiful home and garden filled both inside and out with objects of art. Maggie had hundreds of hybrid daylilies organized by color and size in beds throughout the garden and was an officer of the Topeka Daylily Club. Over the years they hosted many garden tours and holiday parties. Dale wrote in a card to Maggie, “What we have created, experienced and accomplished would not have been possible unless we were together.” Maggie left behind her husband and a black cat named Bella. Maggie's celebration of life will be scheduled for a later date at the Washburn University Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center.
