Martha Kennedy

Martha Kennedy, 85, Topeka, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2022. Martha was born November 14, 1936, in Elmont, Kansas, one of twelve children born to Ivan and Joanne Watson Browning. She was raised on the family farm and attended Elmont and Seaman schools. On August 27, 1955, Martha and John C. “Jack” Kennedy were united in marriage at Assumption Catholic Church, enjoying 51 years together prior to his death September 18, 2006 Church, family and school were most important to Martha. She was a member at Mater Dei Assumption Catholic Church and her children attended Assumption Grade School where she was always involved, volunteering in many ways including the school cafeteria. Martha was small in stature but mighty. She was known by her four sons and her daughters-in-law as the best cook ever. She dearly loved her family and her physical presence will be greatly missed. Grateful to have shared her life are her sons, Chris Kennedy, John Kennedy (Nancy), Matt Kennedy (Terri) and Sam Kennedy (Leanne); grandchildren, Lori, Kala, Robert, Zak, Katie, Courtney, Mollie, Maureen, Sean, Riley, Tanner, Aaron, Bailey, Tucker and Luke; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathy Cox, twin sister, Margaret Stanley and Jan Gessler; and many nieces and nephews. Martha was also preceded in death by her siblings, Bill Browning, Elizabeth Zeller, Charles Browning, Caroline Gudenkauf, Frannie Thomas, Helen Oelke, Robert Browning and Dorothy Marsh, and daughter-in-law, Paula Galbraith Kennedy. Martha’s family will greet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 12, at Mater Dei Assumption Catholic Church where the rosary will be prayed at 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Church. Burial will follow in Rochester Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities (for Corita’s Corner Sandwich Ministry) or to Mater Dei Assumption Church (for the Bell Tower project), and sent in care of Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614.
