Mary Belle Ross

Mary Belle Ross (Akers) was born September 3, 1925, and died June 14, 2020. She lived in Harveyville, and Dover, Kansas in her early years. Her parents were Preston and Dollie Akers. Mary Belle had many roles during her working years starting as a teacher in a one room school and going on to contribute her time to advance the “Public School System” in Topeka. She is a former member of the Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church and helped start the “Children’s School Program” at the church. Mary Belle helped establish the Health and Welfare Fund for Local Union #226, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and worked there for more than 25 years. Following her working years, she traveled. Her favorite destinations were Australia and Hawaii. Mary Belle loved cheering on KU basketball and the KC Royals. Many alarm clocks were set so she would be up in time to watch the games! If she wasn’t cheering on her favorite teams, Mary Belle was supporting her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She adored her family and was so proud of them all. They were the greatest joys in life. Mary Belle was the best cook and baker. She was famous for her baked beans, pies, fried chicken or catfish. Mary Belle and her husband found their dream home in the country at the Field and Stream Club where Charlie was able to enjoy their home for a brief time before his death. Mary Belle loved the Lord and was ready for her reunion with her late husband, Charlie. Her memory will live on through all of those who loved her. Mary Belle was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, Charles Edward Ross, whom she married on May 17,1947; he died on August 18, 1973. Also her parents Preston and Dollie Akers, in-laws Charles and Bertha Ross, sisters Evelyn Schurr, Virginia Spencer, brother James Akers, and daughter-in-law, Nancy Ross. Surviving are two sons Stanley C. Ross and Dennis L. Ross; daughter, Marla J. Ross, and (just like a daughter) Marilynn Mobley. Five grandchildren, Allison Ross, Ashton Ross, Charlie Ross (Paige) and their children Micah, Ivan and Seaver, Melanie Rivera (Carlos) and their children Noah, Daniel and Grace, Robert Halverson and his children Kyle and Kaylin; nieces, Sandra Schurr (Claude), Vicky Schartz (Joe) and their family, Karolyn Fulmer and her family; nephew, James P. Akers (Ann) and their family. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2020, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614 Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2020, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 29th and Urish in Topeka. Following the funeral, any and all are welcome to join the family in procession to Prairie Home Cemetery in Topeka where Mary Belle will be laid to rest.
