Mary Hayes

Mary Agnes Hayes, 94, Topeka, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2022. Mary was born February 23, 1928, in Catherine, Kansas, the 16th child of Paul and Mary Seitz Miller. She attended Lost Canyon School and spent some time in the convent of the Dominican Sisters of Peace in Great Bend, Kansas while discerning her vocation. As it happened, her calling was not to the religious life but to marriage and family life. Mary and Robert Lee “Bob” Hayes were united in marriage June 21, 1951, in St. Catherine Church, Catherine, Kansas. The couple enjoyed 63 years together until his death March 31, 2014. Mary was a member of Mater Dei Parish, having been a long-time member of Assumption Church, belonging to the Altar Society, helping to serve funeral dinners and volunteering as an RCIA sponsor. She held many jobs during her lifetime but none were more important than her family. Mary was loving, kind, caring, giving, very humble and so grateful for every kindness shown her. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Grateful to have shared her life are her children, Mary Randel (Denny Goldberg), Paula O’Brian (Dean), Mark Hayes, Gary Hayes (Becky) and Roberta Erickson (Rod); grandchildren, Makenzie Randel, Jody Cole (Marcia) and Joshua Cole, Emma Herrera (Eric), Jesse Hayes, Michael Hayes (Anna) and Casey Hayes and Taylor Erickson (Heather) and Parker Erickson (Shelby); great-grandchildren, Tristan Cole, Samantha Cole, Hadley and Emilia Herrera, Raylin and Silas Hayes, Jolie Hayes, Braylynn and Micah Hayes, Bennett and Reese Erickson, and Grady Erickson. All 15 of Mary’s brothers and sisters, Alphonse, Ottila, Joseph, Marcellus, Severin, William Rudolph, Irene, Rita, Leona, twins Edgar and Cyrilla, Gilbert, Louise, Eugene, and Robert, preceded her in death. Services will be Saturday, October 29, 2022. Visitation will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at Mater Dei Holy Name Church where the rosary will be prayed at 9:30. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Inurnment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
