Richard "Rick" McDonald

Richard “Rick” McDonald, 74, Tecumseh, Kansas, passed away October 2, 2021. Rick was born in Topeka, Kansas, to Eugene and Wilma McDonald on August 8, 1947. Rick was raised in the Oakland Community and attended Topeka High School, graduating in 1965. He married Ramona Rosetta on May 4, 1985. They enjoyed traveling, camping and doing crafts together. Rick worked for the City of Topeka Engineering Division for 34 years. After retiring, Rick started the company R&R Ventures of Topeka, Inc. to provide Technical Services and Qualified Inspection Services for the City of Topeka, Water Pollution Control Division and Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC). Rick hired fellow retired workers and grew the company to as large as six people. Rick knew the city’s sewer system like the back of his hand. He loved figuring out how to replace collapsed lines and working with the contractors to get the job complete. Rick took a lot of pride in his work and enjoyed the relationships he made with the City Employees and Contractors he called his great friends. Rick and his brother formed a country band called “Rick and the Wagon Masters” in the ‘60s. They played for over 25 years in local bars, for county fairs, warm-ups for popular country stars, private parties and weddings. Rick was always proud of his children, Bryan, Stacy and Heather and enjoyed doing things with his family. Rick is survived by his wife, Ramona; children, Bryan McDonald, Heather and husband, Craig Morton; son-in-law, Patrick Garlock; grandchildren, Zakkhary Garlock, Jessica Garlock, Darian Morton and Hailey Morton; great-granddaughter, Charlette Hatcher; brothers, Lloyd McDonald and his wife, Kim, Kenneth McDonald and his wife, Linda; and sister-in-law, Margaret McDonald. Rick is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Stacy Garlock and brother, Thomas McDonald. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, October 7, at Highland Heights Christian Church, 29th and Tecumseh Road. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Church.
