Sherry Hiszczynskyj

Elaine “Sherry” Carol Hiszczynskyj, 66, of Topeka, Kansas passed away April 12, 2007 in a motor vehicle accident near Lamoni, Iowa. She was born February 14, 1941 in Mason City, Iowa. She was the daughter of Phillip Johnson Sheridan and Carol Elaine Sheridan. She graduated in 1959 from Saint Joseph High School in Mason City, Iowa where she enjoyed playing the string bass and percussion. Sherry was a graduate of Mason City Junior College. She graduated from Saint Anthony Hospital School of Medical Technology, in Rockford, Illinois. She also graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. She worked as a Medical Laboratory Technologist for the University of Iowa Medical Center in Iowa City, where she met her husband. Sherry married Dr. Roman Hiszczynskyj on September 11, 1965. Sherry was a loving wife, mother and grandmother; a caring daughter and sister; and a kind and generous friend. She was an active parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church in Topeka, Kansas. She was a member of Chapter CS of PEO, the Junior League of Topeka, and the Shawnee County Medical Society Alliance. She served on the Board of Directors of Ronald McDonald House and held several leadership positions on the Mulvane Women’s Board. Sherry enjoyed music, theater, art and travel. Sherry is survived by her husband, Dr. Roman Hiszczynskyj. Other survivors include daughter, Ann and son-in-law, Hon. Timothy Henderson of Wichita, Kansas, daughter, Carol and son-in-law, Dr. George Evans of Topeka, Kansas, daughter, Laura Hiszczynskyj of Eugene, Oregon; son Gregory Hiszczynskyj of Topeka, Kansas; and eight grandchildren. Sherry is also survived by five siblings, Cynthia (Cindy) and her husband, Sherman Berg of Blair, Nebraska, Suzanne (Susie) and her husband, Ron Factor of Marksville, Louisiana, Dr. Richard and his wife, Frances Sheridan of Grass Valley, California, Michael Sheridan of Topeka, Kansas, Daniel Basgall of Cowpens, South Carolina, and sixteen nieces and nephews. Sherry is preceded in death by her parents, Phillip Johnson Sheridan, and Carol Elaine Basgall; her stepfather, Sylvester Basgall and a nephew. Sherry will lie in state from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home. A rosary will be prayed at 5:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Catholic Church in Topeka, Kansas.
