Steven Slough

Steven H. Slough, 76, Topeka, Kansas, passed away on August 10, 2026. He was born on October 19, 1949, to Alfred and Helen Slough. Steve’s love for sports began at an early age. Throughout his youth, he played football, basketball, baseball, and track. His passion for athletics continued into college, where he played football and baseball at Sterling College. His baseball team was later inducted into the Sterling College Hall of Fame. While at Sterling, Steve earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education, beginning a lifelong dedication to both education and athletics. Steve’s love of sports remained a constant throughout his life. Whether he was playing, coaching, cheering from the sidelines, or watching his children and grandchildren participate, sports were always a meaningful part of his life. Steve had a deep passion for education and dedicated more than 50 years to teaching and serving in a variety of educational capacities. One of the greatest joys of his career was encountering current and former students while out and about. Steve loved when they would stop to visit and talk with him, and those moments were a testament to the lasting impact he had on the lives of so many students. Steve met the love of his life, Judy, in August of 1984 at a mutual friend’s wedding. From that moment on, Steve and Judy were inseparable. They were married on April 13, 1985, and began building their life together. Steve was known for never meeting a stranger. His warm personality and genuine interest in others allowed him to make friends wherever he went. He was also well known for his catchy ditties that he created for just about everything—one of the many unique and memorable qualities that made Steve so special. Above all else, Steve’s greatest passions were his faith and his family. His love and support for his family were evident in the intentional way he lived his life and in the unconditional love he gave so freely. Steve cherished his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandson and took great pride in each of them. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Helen Slough, and his sister, Marsha Slough. Steve is survived by his wife, Judy Slough; children, Shandi (Jeff) Hillard, Heather (Aaron) Burris, Joel Slough, and Ashlynn (Larry) Embers; grandchildren, Toby J., Glenna (Orion), Lauren, Emily (James “JC”), Shaye, Ty, Carlin, Avery, and Gracelynn; great-grandson, James “Jac”; sister, Linda Slough; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many other extended family members. Steve leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, education, sports, friendship, and family. His impact will continue through the countless students he taught, the people he encouraged, the family he loved, and the many lives he touched along the way.
