Susan Schell

Susan Joan Schell, 65, Topeka, Kansas, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away Friday, April 24, 2026. Susan was born June 25, 1960, in Topeka, the daughter of John “Jack” and Ruth Capeless Brooke. She was a 1978 graduate of Topeka High School and attended Washburn University. On May 19, 1984, Susan and Gregg Evan Schell were united in marriage at Most Pure Heart of Mary Church, enjoying more than 41 years together. In 2021, Susan capped her 41 years of service at Blue Cross Blue Shield, retiring as a claims account analyst. Attending her children’s and grandchildren’s events, serving as a room parent and Girl Scout leader, and spoiling her grandchildren were just some of the ways she showed her great love of family. The annual Sisters Weekends were devoted to crafting, antiquing and just having fun together. She shared some of those same events with her “work sisters” as well. Susan went all out for all holidays, and her decorating included dressing the “porch goose” for every holiday. A favorite pastime for Susan was taking a bubble bath while reading a book for several hours. She was dearly loved and her presence will be greatly missed. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Gregg Schell; son, Stephen Schell (Haley); daughter, Sarah Guerrero (Aaron); grandchildren, Pierson Guerrero, Sawyer Schell and one grandson still on the way, Cole Schell; her siblings, Carole Shapiro (Dave), Ruthie Droste (Dan), Susan’s twin, Sandy MacGill (Dave), Janice Brooke and Michael Brooke; her father-in-law, Leonard Schell, sisters-in-law, Jolene Archer (Mac) and Kathy Hecker (Matt), Ellie Brooke and Sally Brooke; brother-in-law, David Eberhart; and many nieces and nephews. Susan was preceded by her parents and five siblings, John Brooke, Jim Brooke, Barbara Eberhart, Cathy Whitaker and her husband, Michael Whitaker, and Danny Brooke. The Rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614, where the visitation will follow until 7 p.m. Funeral service will be Friday, May 15, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Cotton O’Neil Cancer Center, sent in care of the funeral home.
