William Wempe

William (Bill) Thomas Wempe, 73, Topeka, passed away September 16, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. Bill was born in the city of Topeka to Dr. Gerard and Ruth Wempe on August 1, 1941. He grew up amongst his siblings and developed a great passion for sporting events and brotherhood. His greatest hobbies included the great sport of golf, Washburn sporting events, movies, and family gatherings. He became a proud graduate of Hayden High School in 1959. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Washburn University. He graduated from Washburn University and loved to attend the university’s football games with his grandchildren. He did his best not to miss a game! One of Bills’ proudest moments, as recalled by his son, was the time he achieved a hole-in-one. Bill always attended each of his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was a proud and happy grandparent. Bill Wempe’s career ranged from his service as a 1st LT in the United States Air Force to his position with the State of Kansas Insurance Department. Bill was a lifetime member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish and held a strong faith that extended to his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We must remember that all things happen for a reason and that Bill is in a better place, where every putt brings a hole-in-one, where he joins hands with Christine once again, and where every brother who has passed can stand beside him. Bill is survived by his three children, Lori (Warren) Stewart, Jill (Bill) Klemz, Billy (Suzy) Wempe; grandchildren, Kelsey Stewart, Jacob Klemz, Ryan Klemz, Makenzie Wempe; brothers, Jack (Shirley) Wempe, Joe (Debbie) Wempe, and Jim (Joan) Wempe. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 33 years, Christine, and his older brother Jerry Wempe. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1800 SW Stone Ave, Topeka KS 66604. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church.
