He also enjoyed trips to Bright Angel and Kaibab trails in the Grand Canyon. During a vacation in Alaska, Alan enjoyed white water canoeing, numerous wildlife encounters and flying over Denali Peak. Later vacations would include visits to the caves in France, containing Cro-Magnon wall drawings. His later years were more focused on scuba diving, bicycling, running and completing triathlons. He spent six weeks camping in Tobermory, Canada learning hand hewing techniques, reading history books, and raising a timber framed home. Alan enjoyed farm life with his family, interacting with foreign students, family reunions and homemade ice cream.
