Alan J. Geery

September 20, 1940 - November 10, 2021

Alan J. Geery, 81, Tecumseh, passed on Wednesday, November 10th, at Prairie Wind Senior Living Center, due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Alan’s youth was spent in Salina, Kansas. He was a tireless basketball and baseball player in church leagues. Boy Scouts canoe trips to Canada and Philmont were experiences with fond memories. Summers during high school were spent working at a cemetery and for a paving contractor. Alan met his wife, Melinn, in the school cafeteria during his junior year in high school in 1957. They were united in marriage in Pasadena, California in 1963. Alan graduated from KU with a BS degree in Engineering Physics in 1963 and held membership in Sigma Tau and Tau Beta Pi fraternity houses, and honorary engineering societies. He worked in Los Angeles for 5 years at Planning Research Corporation. Alan later received a BS and Master’s degree in Civil Engineering and began working for the City Engineers in Topeka, Kansas. His final employment was with Bartlett & West Engineers in Topeka, Kansas. Alan was an avid rough camper, enjoyed back packing and rock climbing in California forests, and climbed Mount Whitney twice. He also enjoyed trips to Bright Angel and Kaibab trails in the Grand Canyon. During a vacation in Alaska, Alan enjoyed white water canoeing, numerous wildlife encounters and flying over Denali Peak. Later vacations would include visits to the caves in France, containing Cro-Magnon wall drawings. His later years were more focused on scuba diving, bicycling, running and completing triathlons. He spent six weeks camping in Tobermory, Canada learning hand hewing techniques, reading history books, and raising a timber framed home. Alan enjoyed farm life with his family, interacting with foreign students, family reunions and homemade ice cream. Alan is survived by his wide Melinn; son, John (Erika); grandson, Johnnie; daughters, Emily and Bailey; and Emily’s mother Andrea Cawthon. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Travis. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care Hospice and sent in care of Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Rd. Topeka, Kansas 66614. Condolences may be sent online to www.kevinbrennanfamily.com
