Alyson Anne Walter Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Alyson Anne Walter, 57, of Topeka passed away on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at her home in Southwest Topeka. Alyson was born, the second of six children, to Don and Alice Gould Humphreys on November 10, 1963, in Great Bend KS. Alyson graduated from Great Bend High School in 1981. She graduated in 1986 from Kansas University with a degree in Occupational Therapy (OT). Upon graduation she worked as a pediatric OT at Lakemary Center in Paola. While living in Olathe, Alyson met David Walter. They married on September 23, 1989, in Great Bend. Dave was instantly attracted to her independent nature. Until 2002, Alyson worked as an OT at the Capper Foundation eventually serving as Director of the Infant/Toddler program. During her time in that position, the program multiplied its reach and client base. Alyson left the Capper Foundation to work at raising her children. Her greatest joy was playing with her boys and being with family. She was a devoted mother to two sons and was well suited to the role of being the only woman in the household. Alyson expressed her love through the care she gave her family and the kindness she extended to everyone who knew her. With her sons in middle school, Alyson established a program through the YMCA to teach swimming to students with special needs. She was an accomplished swimmer in her own right during high school and in college. She became a member of the Kansas University Swim team after walking on as a freshman. She was praised by her coaches at both levels for her hard work and dedication. She went on to letter at KU and was particularly proud when she was inducted, with her team, into the KU Athletic Hall of Fame. Alyson enjoyed crafting, scrap booking, and making greeting cards. She loved to decorate for each holiday and worked to make each one special for her family. Alyson is survived by her husband Dave; sons, John (Keelan) Walter, and Christian Walter, all of Topeka; mother, Alice Humphreys of Hesston KS; brothers, Doug (Acacia) Humphreys of Changchun, China, Jay Humphreys (Carin Carr) of Castle Rock CO, Hutch Humphreys of San Diego CA, and Hank (Amy) Humphreys of Hesston. Alyson was preceded in death by her father, Donald Humphreys, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Florence Walter, and sister Meredith Humphreys. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 1st, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Rd, Topeka KS 66614. Funeral service will be 5 p.m. Friday, July 2nd, at the funeral home.
