Evelyn Bernica

July 29, 1930 - January 17, 2022

Evelyn L. Schneider Bernica, 91, Topeka, Kansas, passed into the arms of Our Lord Monday, January 17, 2022. Evelyn was born July 29, 1930, at home in Nortonville, Kansas, to Charles William and Ida Oleva Good Schneider. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, attended St. Joseph Grade School and graduated from Nortonville High School. On August 21, 1954, Evelyn and Robert “Bob” Bernica were united in marriage. Bob was in the Air Force and the couple was stationed at several bases before settling down in Topeka in 1959. Bob preceded Evelyn in death on February 22, 2007. The Bernicas lived across the street from Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church for 52 years. Evelyn served as librarian, room mother, PTO President, Scout Leader, Great Books facilitator, lunch lady, funeral coordinator, and member of the Daughters of Isabella; the church and school were integral parts of the family’s day to day lives. Evelyn also served at Let’s Help, drove cancer patients to treatments, and assisted others in the community. For many years, she lovingly managed the Westwood Apartments, caring for her tenants like family. Evelyn’s life revolved around her faith and her precious family; and she loved babies! Grateful to have shared Evelyn’s life are her children, Vicki Fulmer and husband, Ed, Topeka; Greg Bernica and wife, Liz, Houston; Cynthia Sabatini and husband, Mike, Leawood; Susan Bernica, Leawood; and Mary Jones and husband, Matt, Dallas; ten grandchildren, Teresa (Bret), Brian (Crystal) and Adam Burnett, Joey (Jessica), Tim (fiancé, Claire Davis) and Annie Bernica, Mara and Anna Sabatini, Catherine and Luke Jones; six great-grandchildren, Kyler, Logan, Charlie, Rusti, Oliver and Henry; siblings, Elizabeth Coleman (Tom), Valley Falls, Ralph Schneider, Mound City and Patrick Schneider (Jean) Rossville; sisters-in-law, Neva Schneider (who passed away shortly after Evelyn), Charlotte, Bonnie Schneider, Topeka and Terri Schneider, Atchison; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Evelyn was also preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Kenneth, Harold, Richard, Dale, Jack and Mary Elaine Schneider, Linda Talley (Lloyd); and Charles, Ellen and Edgar Schneider; and sister-in-law, Leota Schneider. The family is grateful to all those at Lexington Park for their loving care. They are so touched by the love, prayers and support they are receiving from friends and extended family. Due to the pandemic, Mass of Christian Burial will be private for the immediate family only but will be livestreamed on Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home Facebook page at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 21. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
