Helen M. Eakes

October 3, 1927 - March 23, 2022

Helen May Hartman Eakes, 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, March 23, 2022. Helen was born and raised on a farm outside Meriden, Kansas, the daughter of William and Amelia Fritton Hartman. On a horse, she rode to the Southstar one-room schoolhouse. Helen married Robert G. Eakes in Assumption Catholic Church, Topeka, on September 6, 1948. She was a current member of Christ the King Catholic Church, founding member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and former member of the St. Matthew Altar Society. Helen worked for Macy’s and Dillard’s Department Stores, at the Voting Polls, and as a Nurse’s Aide for Head Start. While she worked for Dillard’s she was proud to earn the award of Pacesetter many times and as the men’s Ralph Lauren Polo Rep she took pride in her department and developed relationships with her many customers. Helen enjoyed the volunteer work she did at St. Francis Hospital and Christ the King Church. Helen is survived by her children, Mary Bowler (Larry), Robert Eakes (Diane), Victoria Amis (Mike), Christine Emery (Ron), Steven Eakes (Val), Carla Compton, Brenda Guyle (Dan) and Lisa Rochford (Bob); 21 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, her son, Michael Eakes, her son-in-law, Mike Compton, three brothers and four sisters. Rosary will be prayed at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5973 SW 25th Street, Topeka KS 66614, with Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Church. Private inurnment will be at a later date in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the Topeka Rescue Mission.
