Joseph John Eakes, 90, Topeka, Kansas, passed away Monday, December 7, 2020. Joe was born March 11, 1930, in Garden City, Kansas, to John and Marie Schaefer Eakes. He served our country in the Korean War. On July 22, 1950, Joe and Marian Shorthill were united in marriage enjoying 54 years together prior to her death December 17, 2004. Joe retired from Adams Business Forms and One Man Motors, his wholesale car company. Joe was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He had a strong faith, was a hard-working honest man who made deals with a handshake. He was witty and famous for his one-liners. Joe dearly loved his family and that love treasured and returned. Joe is survived by his children, Marilyn Anderson, Teresa Burgess, Marcia Devlin, Patty Kadlicek, Annette Eakes, and Barbie Appelhanz; daughter-in-law, Sheryl Sullivan; 40 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and his friend, Jayne Nichols. Joe was also preceded in death by his son, Joe Eakes, grandchildren, Jennifer Anderson, Chris Eakes, Rodney Gaston and all 13 of his siblings. Mass of Christian Burial is private and will be streamed on Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home Facebook page at 12:30 p.m. Friday, December 11. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Joe’s life sometime next year when it is safer to gather.
