Douglas "Doug" Fisher

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Eugene Fisher. Douglas was the third of eight children born to Clifford Wayne Fisher and Betty Jean Germann Fisher on January 19, 1947, in Emporia, Kansas. Doug was a proud military veteran who served as a Navy reservist during high school. Following his graduation from Hayden Catholic High School in 1965, he immediately entered active duty. He was stationed aboard the USS Little Rock of the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean. Doug and Mary Lou Hertlein were high school sweethearts who started dating in 1965. After rearranging their initial wedding date due to the Six-Day War and the cancellation of Doug’s leave, they were married on June 30, 1967. They celebrated 59 years of marriage and were together for over 61 years. Mary was able to spend the last year of Doug’s deployment with him, living in Gaeta, Italy. Their daughter, Deann, was born in October 1968, and on their return to the United States, their son, Matthew, was born in December 1971. In 1970, Doug began working at Kansas Power and Light, now Evergy, at the steam plant. He then worked as a journeyman lineman for the next 35 years. He was a staunch supporter of the IBEW Union Local 304. At various times throughout his union career, he held the office of Secretary Treasurer, President, and Business Manager. After retiring, he enjoyed fishing trips with his friends as well as his weekly coffee and card groups. Nothing was more important to Doug than his wife, Mary, and his children, Deann and Matt. He cherished every memory made with his family. He loved camping, fishing, boating, and traveling, spending many summers at Shawnee Lake. He and Mary also spent multiple winters “snow birding” in their RV in Florida. For over 25 years a source of many, many memories was the family fireworks stand. Once retired in 2005, Doug and Mary loved to travel. They took several trips to Europe and explored all over the United States; however, Las Vegas was always on the calendar a few times a year. While Doug’s children were special, he adored his grandchildren, Johnathan, Alexis, Isabelle, and Brian. He never missed a baseball, basketball, football game, dance recital, or school program. There was nothing more important than spending time with his grandchildren. Doug was welcomed into heaven by those that preceded him in death, his parents; in-laws, Clarence and Theresa Hertlein; brothers, Ken, Steve, and Greg Fisher; and brother-in-law, Karl Glatt. Doug is survived by his loving wife, Mary; daughter, Deann (Gregg) Kipers; son, Matthew (Valerie) Fisher; grandsons, Johnathan (Sav) Jurgensmeier and Brian Fisher; granddaughters, Alexis and Isabelle Jurgensmeier; as well as his bonus great-granddaughter, Mariah Kipers. He is also survived by his sisters, Judith (Garth) Price, Mary Glatt, Jeanne (Richard) Roberts, and Theresa (Pat) Martin. He leaves behind sisters-in-law, Barbara Fisher, Nancy Fisher, Ginny Burghart, Rita Hertlein, and Carol (Dan) DeBacker; as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 25, 2026, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614. Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 227 SW Van Buren Street, Topeka KS 66603. Inurnment will take place at Mount Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care, in care of the funeral home.
