John Gonzalez

John Edward Gonzalez, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2026, in Topeka, Kansas. John was born on July 25, 1962, to John and Carmen Mendez Gonzalez in Topeka. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1980. John married the love of his life, Sheila Marie Weick, on November 16, 1985. To this union three children were born, Jessica, Janelle, and Nicholas. John was a family man and a warm, welcoming presence to all who had the honor of meeting him. He was always there for all the people in his life, especially his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was truly a presence of safety, stability, comfort, and unconditional love. He fostered and cultivated an environment where his children and grandchildren could fiercely pursue their passions. He was loving, kind, and generous, not only with monetary possessions but with his love, time, and energy as well. He was the kind of man who would hear you needed help and be there for you immediately, he would hear your water was going to be shut off and ensure that did not happen. John loved music, dancing, fashion, and was contagiously funny. He loved sports and was an avid Raiders, KU, and Royals fan. He coached various sporting teams for all his children. He was at every game, and even when he wasn’t the official coach anymore, he continued to coach at home for his children and his grandchildren. John was also a careerman as a Lead Software Developer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas for over 30 years before his retirement in 2022. He also volunteered a lot of his time at Jayhawk Theater, St. Matthew Catholic Church, and Meals on Wheels. John is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sheila; children, Jessica (Shane), Janelle (Judah), Nicholas; grandchildren, Ophelia, Shane Jr., Silas, Francesca; siblings Vincent Gonzalez, Cathy (Jeff) Heit; and several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Josephine Gonzalez, Anastacia Perkins, and Deborah Kyea. Visitation will be at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614 on Sunday, February 15, 2026, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a reciting of the rosary to follow at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, February 16, 2026, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2700 SE Virginia Avenue, Topeka KS. Inurnment will be a private event at a later date at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels in care of the funeral home.
