Lon Matthew Lewis

Lon Matthew Lewis, Sr., 63, passed away quietly in the early morning hours of October 29th, 2011, in Topeka, Kansas, with his family by his side. Born February 6th, 1948 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri to Loren and June Lewis, Lon graduated from Topeka’s Seaman High School in 1966 and soon after, enlisted in the United States Army. After serving a full term, he left the Army honorably and spent the remainder of his life as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Lon was extremely skilled in engine mechanics and wood working. An avid fan of history, Lon was always interested in historical treasure ship recoveries, and metal detecting. His most recent hobby was the construction of a series of eighteenth century cargo ships and schooners. Lon was especially happy when strolling the beaches of Panama City Beach, Florida, looking for special coral and sea shells for his children, eating fresh oysters. Lon is survived by his four children, Eva Marie Trujillo, Janet Marie Lewis, Rebecca Lynn Lewis and Lon Matthew Lewis, Jr., their spouses Daniel Trujillo, Raul Garza, Vonita Lewis, and ten grandchildren, Emilie Dowding, Ryan Negley, Stephanie Trujillo, Alex Trujillo, Brandon Lewis, Rodger Lewis, Isaac Lewis, Jordan Plummer, Roman Plummer and Crystal Lewis. He is also survived by his father, Loren B. Lewis, and siblings, Daniele Harden, Rebecca Egan and Gordie Jim Gross. Lon was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Therese Anne Lewis, his mother, June Gross and siblings, Kathleen Lewis and Brian Gross. On this plain, there lingers great sorrow at the loss of our Father, an uncle, a brother, a son, and a friend. But elsewhere, somewhere along the banks of a well stocked pond and amid the fertile rows of new corn and tomatoes, Lonnie is smiling. He is happy as he casts out that line, heavy with the promising weight of his special Heddon Lucky 13. Mass of Resurrection will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 4, 2011 at Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, 46th and Greenhills Rd. Inurnment will take place with family and close friends.Memorial contributions may be made in Lon’s name to the Colmery Oneil VA Community Living Center, Building 6, sent in care of Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Rd., Topeka, KS 66614.
