Lowell Wendland

Lowell Warren Wendland, 100, passed away July 3, 2026, at The Gardens at Aldersgate, Topeka, Kansas. The son of Otto and Martha Steenbock Wendland, Lowell was born March 16, 1926, in Riley County, Kansas, near Randolph. He graduated from Randolph Rural High School. As a youth, Lowell heard Christ’s call to the ministry. He received his B.A. from Westmar College, LeMars, Iowa, and his Master of Divinity from Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, Illinois, in 1949. Lowell served these Evangelical United Brethren Churches: Stull, Coal Creek, Clair at St. Joseph, Missouri, Leonardville-Countryside, and these United Methodist Churches: Leonardville-Randolph, Parsons First, Garnett and Westmoreland-Olsburg. Lowell had a passion for learning, understanding and serving in pastoral ministry. He also served on District Committees and Conference Boards including the Board of Professional Ministry for many years and the Board of Global Ministries with Chairmanship of its Committee on Parish and Community Development. Lowell and Edna Faith Schwab were married June 22, 1948, at Holton, Kansas. They were blessed with 73 years of love, devotion and service. They served the church together and co-taught many Mission Studies following trips to Korea, Japan, Puerto Rico and the Holy Land. Following his retirement in 1991, Lowell assisted in pastoral and preaching ministry at Topeka Grace United Methodist Church, and served in the Sunday School, United Methodist Men and the Outreach Committee. Lowell loved his family, cherished each one, and enjoyed many special days and vacations with them. He enjoyed traveling, hiking, reading and craftsmanship. Lowell was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Faith Wendland, his parents, a sister, Enola Keil, and a brother, Eldon Wendland. Lowell is survived by his daughter, Constance “Coni” Walters (Bill) of Kansas City, Missouri; his son, Mark Wendland (B.J.) of Reisterstown, Maryland; three grandchildren, Christopher Walters (Jordan), Amber Wendland and Tyson Wendland; two great-granddaughters, Dilynn Walters and Lorelai Walters; sisters, Leona Bacon, Iola Mullins (Loren) and Wanita Dammann; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 13, at Grace United Methodist Church, 2627 SW Western Avenue, Topeka KS 66611, where visitation will be one-hour prior. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Gardens.
