Philip Shead

Philip Guy Shead, 84, was born in Curranville, Kansas, on November 1, 1940, to parents Elza B. and Mary Ann Jenkins Shead. He departed this life on Monday, April 14, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Phil attended Curranville and Foxtown Union Grade schools and graduated from Mulberry High School in 1958. He played football and basketball during his high school years. At a very young age he learned how to repair vehicles. This mechanical knowledge followed him through life as he always had an old classic he was working on. Phil grew up attending the Mulberry United Presbyterian Church. In more recent years, he was attending Fellowship Bible Church in Topeka. Phil was a Vietnam veteran serving in the United States Army as an EOD Specialist earning a Bronze Star and was honorably discharged. He was a member of the American Legion. After being honorably discharged, most of Phil’s working career was spent in the grocery business. He started as a clerk and through the years became a store manager, trainer, revived failing grocery stores, and was part owner of a store in Topeka. He retired from Walmart. Phil married Doris Miller on November 1, 1985. Phil was a big fan of KU basketball and the KC Chiefs, representing both jerseys at any time. Phil is survived by his daughters, Rebecca Shead, Kimberly Goodman, and Christine Garrett; sons, Michael and Joe Shead; sisters, Joan Shead Hamilton, and Marilyn Shead Soash (Charles); and brother, Jerry Shead (Dee). Phil was preceded in death by his spouse, Doris; sons, Aaron, Frank, Ray and David; parents; sisters, Leola Stephenson, Crystal Barnard, Goldie Benoist, Montcella Snook, Velma Taney, and Barbara Harris; and brothers, Clarence and William Shead. Phil had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who enriched his life. He and his granddaughter, Jada Appenfeller, had a special bond including spending many nights playing Pitch and Cards Against Humanity. They were always exploring new ways to have fun. Funeral service for Phil will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Topeka. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Midland Care or the American Legion, sent in care of the funeral home.
